43 Creative Ways To Include Something Blue in Your Wedding

Incorporating the color blue can be easy if you're having blue bridesmaid dresses, or blue suits or flowers, but what if blue just doesn't fit with your color scheme? Have a bit of blue stitched in your dress, some blue on your pink toe in your pedicure, or even just have a note on your shoes or in your pocket written in blue ink. You'll most likely want to think about having some sort of blue element as you start your wedding planning process. Here are more ideas we've seen for a clever way to do something blue in modern weddings.

1. Blue Flowers

If it works for your color scheme, discuss including something with your florist who will be able to help you find some blue flowers that are in season to include in your celebration either in bouquets or boutinierres. Hydrangeas, delphinium, and thistle are some beautiful blue flowers to consider. If blue flowers aren't a match then even just a blue fabric wrap or charm in the bouquet can work. The addition of blue blooms not only adds a pop of color but also carries sentimental value.

2. Blue Earrings

From a subtle moonstone, aquamarine, or blue topaz, to a deep sapphire blue, many fine jewels, or even their faux counterparts, have a blue hue.  Here are some beautiful earrings for your something blue on Etsy!

3. Hair Accessories with a Touch of Blue

Your something blue could take the form of some beautiful jeweled stones in a hairpin or comb, or some pretty blue floral hairpins. A blue ribbon would work perfectly as well! Or, if it's your style maybe you'll dye a few strands blue. For a less-permanent approach; try one of these something blue hair accessories on Etsy

4. Veils with a Hint of Blue

This is a real statement piece, but there are beautiful blue wedding veils to be had. We also love this blue veil from Veiled Beauty.

5. Sewn-in Patch

Many Etsy shops offer keepsake blue patches that can be sewn into your wedding dress or other attire. These patches can be customized with your initials, name, date,  or a meaningful phrase. We love the patches for dresses and ties created by Shannah J Smith.

6. Blue Wedding Shoes

This is one of our favorite ways to add a 'something blue'. There are some beautiful blue shoes to be had. We love the blue wedding shoes by Badgley Mischka, as well as the pairs by Bella Belle. Many wedding shoes come with a blue lining, to make it easy to have something blue, even if it's not in your outward-facing attire and color scheme. Another option is just to have something written on the sole of your shoe in blue, or to change into a pair of something blue sneakers.

7. Blue Bracelets

A beautiful bridal bracelet with blue tones or fine piece of jewelry in sapphire, topaz, aquamarine, or other blue stone is a wonderful way to do a something blue. We love the look of these blue crystal bracelets offered by Callie On Etsy.

8. Blue Necklace

A beautiful statement necklace with a blue stone, or a simple pendant in blue can be a beautiful touch! These timeless pieces not only serve as "something blue" but also become cherished tokens of your special day.

9. Blue Garter

While the garter toss may be optional, wearing a garter with a hint of blue can be a fun and sentimental way to incorporate the color into your attire. Several sellers on Etsy create beautiful heirloom garters for a touch of elegance.

10. Wedding Ring

Perhaps your wedding bands or engagement ring will feature a blue stone. If not, maybe you'll wear a blue ring on another hand.

11. Blue Wedding Dress

To completely embody the ideal of something blue one could choose a blue wedding dress. See the shop section above for more beautiful examples. Or, if you don't want to show off this blue color,  sewing a bit of blue monogram, charm, or fabric into some inconspicuous part of the gown is a simpler approach.

13. Blue Brooch

Use a brooch to accent a part of your wedding day outfit,  to pin back a sash, on your bouquet wrap, to add to a simple cloth clutch, or use two on your shoes.

14.  Sash

A blue bridal belt can be a beautiful way to do something blue. We like the blue-tinged moonstone belt shown above from Davie and Chiyo, or any one of these blue bridal sashes.

15. Pin

Similar to a brooch, but just a small something blue pin that can be on display,  or pinned and hidden somewhere in your dress,  in your bouquet, or even in your pocket.

16. Bridesmaid Dresses in a Shade of Blue

If you're having bridesmaids or a Maid of Honor - and it works with your wedding colors - have them be your something blue by choosing blue dresses for them. We always keep these pages full of top picks for  light blue bridesmaid dresses, dusty blue bridesmaid dresses,  and navy blue bridesmaid dresses to help give you ideas.

Jackets, wraps, and toppers are an easy way to dress up a wedding dress. If you pick one in blue - or even perhaps do a few photos with a denim jacket over your dress - there you have your something blue!

21. Handkerchief with Blue Embroidery

A handkerchief for happy tears can be a great keepsake for the wedding, and can be a subtle way to do your something blue. Have one embroidered in blue thread with your wedding date, initials, or a saying that is meaningful to you as a couple.

Have your flower girls or ring bearers wear a blue hue, or add a blue sash or tie to their look.

This includes blue tablecloths, table numbers, blue and white vases, the possibilities are endless. Extend the blue theme beyond individual elements to encompass your entire wedding color scheme. Whether it's navy blue, dusty blue, or sky blue, a cohesive color palette adds elegance to the overall aesthetic.

32. Ribbon in Bouquet

The ribbon itself, or a blue stitched monogram, or just a simple charm like this Something Blue charm from Dogeared can be the perfect thing to add blue to a bouquet without involving the flowers.

33. Note in Blue Ink

Keep a note from someone special, a note to yourself, or your vows, and have it written in blue ink, or on blue paper.  This meaningful message adds a thoughtful touch to your wedding day.

35. Blue on the Soles of your Shoes

Some bridal shoes come with blue soles or blue linings to help stand in as your something blue. One could also add a little I Do decal in blue. We've also seen bridesmaids or the groom write a note (in blue ink, of course!) on the soles of wedding shoes. The goal is to dance it all off the soles of your shoes for good luck, so be sure to get a picture beforehand.

36. Blue Robes for Getting Ready

Extend the "something blue" theme to your pre-wedding preparations by wearing blue robes. These comfortable and stylish garments add a sense of unity to the bridal party.

37. Blue Hydrangeas in Bouquet Toss

Florists will often craft a toos bouquet so that you don't have to pitch your main bouquet which you may wish to preserve. Where Does The Wedding Tradition of Something Blue Come From?

One of the most well-known wedding traditions is that of including "something blue" in a bride's wedding attire is rooted in several customs and superstitions related to symbolizing love, fidelity, and good fortune.

The full Old English rhyme is "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe."

The color blue is believed to ward off the evil eye, protecting the couple from negative energy and ensuring a harmonious union.

The other "somethings" mentioned in the old rhyme -- especially the "something old and something borrowed" are often thought to be most meaningful when they come from a married woman in a happy marriage.

"Something new" can usually be easy to find, since quite often the dress or shoes or ring are new, for if the bride is wearing vintage items, then "something old" is covered, and a fresh gift can be just the thing. That's why something blue can be a nice gift from a friend or family member who fits this description.

A sixpence is a little bit more rare. Sixpence is a British coin that is no longer in production for legal tender, but there are versions of sixpence pieces commercially created.  These can be found on Amazon or Etsy if you'd like to have this part of the tradition as well!

While the significance of something blue may have originated many centuries before, the popularity of incorporating something blue into bridal attire during the Victorian era likely contributed to its standing as an enduring tradition with modern brides.

Today, brides continue to embrace this good luck charm. We hope this list will help you creative and personal ways to include the color blue in your wedding as a symbol of love, fidelity, and good fortune.
